I know a lot of companies own multiple stores. On HomeDepot for example, the footer says SEE OTHER SITES which go to a few sites. Those sites don’t link back to HomeDepot yet if you put an external link on the footer of HomeDepot’s site which 500K pages deep that’s 500K backlinks from HomeDepot.

A: Isn’t this bad? I thought the ratio is external links to a site has to be set a certain number? If your site has 90% of it’s external links going to 3/4 domains cause it’s echoed those links across all it’s pages, isn’t that a flag?

B: Also is one of these sites doesn’t link back to HomeDepot is what makes this not link farming? Cause I see other sites that do this? Site A’s footer links to site B and site B links back to site A in it’s footer. And the sites rank well taking spots 1&2 for a top niche. Does this say more about how awful the other sites are or that they’re onto something?

Just because you see big sites doing it, doesn’t mean you’d get away with it with google.

    A. Nope. It’s fine. Why wouldn’t a business that owns other businesses link to them? And no there is no ratio you need to maintain.

    B. Not a link farm at all. It’s a business linking to other businesses that are owned by the same entity. It could maybe get them in trouble if they used keyword rich anchor text instead of the business names or URLs.
