    Core SEO is an art.

    HOW?
(its a science due to data backed up) but all the creative part goes into content, which is written by content writers.

Again we are SEOs and we work on analytical, research, and data backed. Change my mind!

SEO blends data and creativity perfectly, making it both a science and an art.

I lean towards science. Why? I have seen sites rank higher with just a title and an image, or even an embedded video with no text. How do you explain that to content writers churning out 1000 words or 2000 words, thinking they will rank higher? It seems you just need your keywords in the title if you have authority, and that’s it. Also, algorithms are math.

It’s math (statistics) and art for me… the art is when stat’s say kw+location is the right move… but you look at the serps and it’s 6 companies with the exact same meta or it reads bad and you do some instinctive linguistic art and you hit #1

SEO here with over 15 years working daily on campaigns for lawyers:

There’s an art and a science to what we’re doing. In many ways, we’re a conductor for an orchestra.

    – We direct the different instruments of SEO – technical, creative, design

    – We identify changes in tempo and rhythm and adapt our conducting to the orchestra

    – We sometimes wave our hands around a lot pretending we’re making a difference even though it’s the New York philharmonic and they’ve done this piece by Beethoven 10,120 times.

    – Google is the shitty violin player who shows up drunk, misses rehearsals, but is the son of the theater owner, so you have to let them play.

Technical SEO is either working or not working.

Keyword research is data oriented, but once you have the data, you have to act on it. You can’t just shove keywords everywhere, humans think it looks bad and the bots do too. That’s where you have to leverage Language Arts.

Link building and PR can also be an art or at least have some creativity get links.

Google’s algorithm is a black box.

It also has multiple, intention “twiddlers” and systems intended to obfuscate SEO data.

GSC will give as little as 5% of specific click data for certain industries and types of site. You can more scientifically flip a coin than statistically predict that click distribution.

There is no reliable mathematical model you can use reliably to reverse engineer Google. It requires creativity, and good marketing which is a creative process not an analytical one.

Yeah, I get it — SEO is mostly numbers and research. But honestly, the “art” part hits when you’re trying to make the content actually click with people. Data can tell you what to target, but making it readable, interesting, or shareable… that’s all creativity sneaking in.
