My wordpress blog has around 12,000 facebook followers… I was thinking about building an email list via mailchimp plugin…. my question: is mail list still worth the money/time/effort in 2020? thx all

Yes, still worth it. It won’t cost you anything as long as there’s under 2000 subscribers

Yes, it is. But you need to have a plan and take advantage of marketing automation and determine what your goals are for it.
Also, be careful with mailchimp. If all your followers signed up you’d be looking at a $75-$150 bill just for your subscriber count. Check out SendInBlue, you’d be looking at ~$40-70. They price based on emails sent, rather than subscriber count.

Depends on your niche/industry and what you plan to do with the list. Some audiences respond really well to email and the many different ways to make offers. Others… not so much.

thanks for all responses! I would estimate we would receive more than 10k subscribers within 6 months based on traffic… which would be the best option for this? I was told Thrive Leads was an excellent option?
