I keep looking at my site, and things bother me. The form is too wide, of course it'll increase bounce rate. The H1 is too generic, of course people lose interest. The brand just sucks, of course people will lose interest! The menu is too wide, the color is too strong, I can go on and on.

I just spent another 2 hours completely changing my design, only to stare at it, and cringe from how much worse it looked, and quickly reverting it back to what it was with minor improvements. I'll obsess over sentences and wording, making sure the user remains engaged, only to read the same text tomorrow and consider it inconsistent.

The only thing that keeps me stable is the reminder that a few months ago, I did get plenty of converts, so if people converted on my site back then, why wouldn't they convert on my site now. Surely the issue must not be that the site is too generic or uninteresting for Google. It must be something else.

Nope because it interferes with experimenting and trying new things…

People who try to perfect often miss out on a lot of opportunities – its a form of anxiety you need to recognize and get under control

I will have one person the one day tell me the Website Squadron theme sucks, it looks like a gaming website. Then the next day someone else will tell me its the coolest website ever, so unique, they love the gaming theme.

Beauty is in the eye of the beerholder.

Nah dude, you’re not nuts. You’re just way too zoomed in on your own site. When you’ve looked at the same page 500 times, even a font weight starts feeling “off.”

Freeze it for a week. Seriously. Don’t tweak a thing till you’ve got actual data, like where people click or drop. If the numbers are solid, the “problem” is probably just you overthinking at 2 a.m. (been there 🙃).

Perfectionism is a negative mindset that will throw you around in a vicious circle and eats creativity for breakfast. I dealt with it in the past and it kills your creativity, productivity, consistency and forces you to a standstill, personal and business wise. What helped me was introducing reality checks: every time I caught myself overthinking a design, I parked the task and work on a more easier task first, one that gave me new energy. Once that task was done, I again did a reality check and tried to look at the task from a different perspective. Not my own based perspective, but a client side view of things. After all: you are your own biggest critic. Your perspective differs so much from the perspective of clients or those that visit your website. Try turning your mindset into thinking that your perfectionism isn’t seen by others, but rather by just one imaginary visitor of your website: your inner critic. THAT visitor is never going to convert and only hold you back from thriving and going forward with your business. Focus on cut-off points: 80% done? Move on! Perfection is in the details that only you see, and in beauty you will die. The other 20% can be done later, once your business is thriving (which will give you tons of positive energy) and you have some spare time left to perfect it. Hope this helps.

It does sound like you obsessing over the design, when really it would probcbly be better to get feedback from people and users rather than making sweeping changes

Often when you are so close to your site it’s hard to be objective, you 2nd guess yourself also when you are under pressure you tend to make bad decisions, you need people with fresh eyes

You should get some feedback and consider any design chsbges and take a step back

You shouldn’t edit the page so often, people like to remember old things and remember the look of the page

Yes, I do the same things.

Think of your main target market customer and do a little bit of research in them, how old, what they like, etc etc. Once you understand them a bit, go to chatgpt or grok and type in the information you have, the name of your website, your ideas and all the different angles you have tried for positioning your website already.

Just keep trying until you come up with a good emotional connection between your customer and what you sell.

Make sure your site presents well on mobile.

it doesn’t mean there would be zero conversions if you do nothing. you are constantly improving a website to improve every aspect. it never ends

Long live the perfectionism. I’m myself a perfectionist and had the same problem.

When I started getting busier with client work I stopped obsessing and learned to love my website the way it is.

The only reason for changes would be if I get constant traffic but noone takes action.

Can relate. Try to only spend an hour each month making adjustments. Make a list of priorities that drive business results and commit to them. Tweaking your web design isn’t one of them im guessing

So you’re a natural born SEO as in optimizer!

I can always obsess about further optimizing things.

Is it already compulsive? Do you still eat and sleep?

I tend to piss people off by suggesting improvements.

I comment with feedback on their posts, articles or sites.

This way I ostracize many ego-driven people. Why?

They just want someone’s approval, not helpful advice.

So does your perfectionism already hurt yourself?

Then seek help. Is it still helpful? Then capitalize on it!
