While it’s debatable if they have a direct correlation with your optimization, they are nevertheless important as by sharing other links to your audience you’re building yourself up as an authority. Plus, it’s good karma. Giving backlinks to others will encourage others to give you backlinks.

It’s always good to link out to content that delivers additional content to your user.
