I started my art project account on Instagram first, and then a few months later on Xiaohongshu. I was really surprised by how differently the two platforms work. Even when I share almost the same content (though I write in Chinese on Xiaohongshu for the local audience), the reaction is quite different.

On Xiaohongshu, people tend to be much more sincere? or expressive in their comments and interactions. Sometimes a post suddenly gets really high views and takes off, something that never happens on my Instagram even though I actually have more followers there. It feels like the algorithm gives posts more chances to reach beyond just your followers.

Nowadays I feel like I have much more interaction with people on Xiaohongshu. I can really feel that they enjoy my work and that we are communicating. Even though it is still a small micro community, it truly feels like I have real fans there, much passionate energy than Instagram.

I was really impressed by this difference, and it made me curious. Has anyone else noticed the same thing? How do you think Xiaohongshu’s algorithm works compare to Instagram’s?

Thanks for sharing your comparison, kinda surprised to seeing Xiaohongshu(Rednote) mentioned here. I think you nailed it with the word ***community***. That’s really what sets Xiaohongshu apart.

Actually, just last month, they even updated their official slogan from *“Your Life Guide”* to *“Your Life Interest Community.”* The idea is that interest tags are now the core of how connections form. Users aren’t just “recording” daily life anymore, they’re more like co-creating content and even acting as “style curators.”

That’s why it feels more interactive, the platform has evolved into a mix of search, content, and even shopping, all tied together by community vibes. It gives posts more organic chances to spread, beyond just your own followers. Would love to hear more takes from others too!
