I was recently hired by a Web Design agency that wants to get into social media management for clients. We have a client that just started his business and has no social media accounts. As a tadpole out of college, I’m curious about the process of setting up said social media accounts. Do I create them all with the client’s email address? Or my company email address? How does it work if the client wants to take over the accounts after a certain time?

When my team is creating accounts on a clients behalf, we usually instruct them to create the account with their email + a password we give them. Then we handle the rest of the setup, optimization, content, etc. and will have them change the password once we are finished and add us as staff (if the platform supports it).

I really think that’s a preference thing. One person might suggest using an internal email address they have tied to the client. Another person might suggest having the client create the account and give you the login details. The former situation would need to be done if the client is too intimidated or doesn’t have time to create the account themselves. Using an internal email also helps prevent the client from getting email notifications for which you then have to spend time interacting with them. Instagram sends a notification every single time someone logs in, so clients start thinking they’re getting hacked for instance. LOL So, I would consider the pros and cons of each and then make the choice for each client individually.
