  • Company has nearly my company name – but isn’t a competitor

Posted by seohelper on July 20, 2020 at 9:32 pm

I have a company, let’s call it “Banana”, and recently another company popped up, let’s call them “BananaStand”. They aren’t in the same business as me, not even close. But they seem to be on a warpath to take the SEO achievements I have created for my company in the last 3 years.

They bumped me from position 1 for my own company name for SEO (when you google “Banana”). They often refer to themselves on their website as Banana rather than their full name BananaStand.

Is there anything I can do to reclaim my position 1 spot and stomp them out?

tld;dr a business who isn’t a competitor has nearly the same business name and is now outranking me on branded terms. What do I do?

Do you have social accounts with your brand?

How much of your search traffic comes from people searching by your company’s name? I bet you don’t see too much of a dip. People looking for your company know the name and will find it.

Probably get more links with your company name as anchor.
Also it’s partially Google’s fault as they are the ones who bumped you.

Improve your own SEO. Get more backlinks, create more content. Dont sit on it and hope for the best.

    Here are some suggestions:

    – create a wikipage for your company. Tons out there just copy ones template and refill with your info
    – use same as schema and link up social accounts
    – use organization schema on homepage
    – generally improve local seo
    – create gmb if you havent already

And pray to google gods that you get a knowledge graph before they do and claim it.

Generally navigational queries like brand name get sorted solely based on volume so if they have 1000 people searching banana and selecting their website rather than yours cuz thats just where they want to go, not much you can do about it.

This is so common, I suggest it to my clients but none gets it.

This happens a lot when people use more general terms in their business name. I have a client that called themselves region medical specialty and were surprised when someone popped up with region medical speciaty of city.
