This is difficult to answer without knowing how competitive and the niche. But the big picture is that you will need backlinks to your site (period) to build a healthy and optimized system.

I think it depends on many factors like your niche, your website age and authority. If your website is of high authority then it might be easy but if you are starting with a new site then it will be very difficult. For a new site i would recommend you choose low competitive keywords and then with time when you rank on low cmp. keywords, you can start working on medium and high comp. keywords as well.
