  • Can social media take away your handle if they need it?

With the new presidency, the twitter handle of the previous administration “@POTUS” was archived under “@POTUS45” similarly to how when Obama left, his twitter account became “@POTUS44.” Let’s say someone already has the handle for “@POTUS46” and they use it either frequently or not. Can twitter or any social media request or force the user to surrender “@POTUS46” so that Biden’s tweets are archived once he leaves?

The better question is: are you famous enough for them to care about your handle?

Yes. Some companies will be courteous and offer to pay a fee…but they can technically just enforce trademark to get a username. I’ve personally seen this happen from the brand side.

Can they take it? Check their TS but probably yes. Also, you won’t be able to create a new account with a name like that or use an existing and change the name. I tried with a few POTUS# and they are all unavailable.

They can do anything they want. You don’t own it, they do. You agreed to their terms which say they can terminate or change your account at any time.

    Yes. They can.

First and foremost it’s their platform, their rules.

But additionally, most of them have rules now against cybersquatting. Even if you didn’t intend to. Being POTUS46 is literally parking in a space that is going to be filled by someone else.

Specifically “@POTUS” and a bunch of varying forms are “taken” by twitter so to speak. A long time ago when Twitter decided to take “POTUS” related accounts, they probably just sent a message saying they had to change their handles. They probably do this with other lines of handles, but I can’t think of any examples.

As far as a person or a company, Twitter doesn’t allow impersonation, so for the most part, the real (famous) person can claim and gain their own name. And a company can gain their company name.

Well after seeing what happened with the stock market today and the trading platform Robinhood, the government and big corps can do whatever the fuck they want. So yes!

Yes if the person has a trademark for it. Or can prove they has a reason to use it. It also depends in the account that currently has the username. If the Twitter account has the target username but hasn’t tweeted since 2014 and it’s just 1 tweet or something, then likely yes. With taken some time of back and forth, but can be done with patience.

They shouldn’t have the right to stop someone from expressing his right to free speech. It’s so frustrating when they lower your organic reach and you don’t show up to most of your fans/friends/whoever ?

It’s actually one of the reasons why we’re trying to develop automated Ads boosting tool, to help people spare some time and get visible.
