Can I use quotes from famous writers on Facebook/ Instagram posts?

I have a Facebook page for my business, which specializes in writing services and creative writing classes. I want to start doing daily content and would like to post one or two quotes from famous writers every week. These would be short quotes and advice on the craft of writing from big authors.

Can I do this legally? The posts would be used to add value and not to sell anything.

    Thank you!

As long as you’re giving attribution to the person the quote came from I believe it should be fine.

If you decide to eventually use quotes to sell a product/service that’s when copyright might come in if the quote is protected.

In theory, whether or not you can quote from someone’s Facebook page should be determined by the same analysis used to determine whether or not you can quote from any other printed material. … Facebook Can Use Material Posted on Facebook.

You would need to mention the name of the person whose quote you are using. This is important if you don’t want to face any issues.

Give your proper attribution and you will be fine.

Just, one word of caution–verify the quote is genuine. There are a slew of made-up quotes by a lot of famous people, and it never looks good to have someone stand up in your arena and yell to the world “THEY NEVER SAID THAT!!! THAT IS A MADE UP QUOTE!!!”

And, rest assured, that person will post in all caps, and they will provide links to some researcher who will conclude that the “quote” in question was probably created in some Newspaper in the 1950s (or whenever) and there is no evidence of the person ever having said it before then–despite the fact they died a century earlier.

If you are going to do quotes, be a professional at it 🙂
