A competitor of mine has contacted me asking did I want to buy some equipment as they're closing down, im not interested in the equipment but they do have a good ranking domain in our niche.

What benefit if any is there to try and purchase this domain name? I dont want to change my domain which is also well ranking but can i improve my position in anyway by taking over theirs?

Well it prevents anyone else getting the domain for one. Secondly, you could probably redirect it to your domain and enjoy a little traffic bump for a bit.

My thoughts are that the main value is in preventing another competitor from getting it.

Also, what about running two domains with the same backend service? Be good to own ranking no1 and 2 with different domains. A bit like a supermarket selling both coke and pepsi.

Seems to me the move would be to try and get the domain and the phone number, and then try and keep Google in the dark so that you get both ranking slots.

    You can either:

    A. 301 redirect the domain to yours to get their link equity

    B. Rebuild a website on it to have two websites positioned in the SERP, capturing more clicks, and thus leads/sales

    C. Park the domain to prevent any competitors from using it in the future

Most of the time, people go for option A since it’s the easiest to set up, while still benefiting their main site, but option B can be even more profitable, especially if the domain is not branded.

Keep both sites running and siphon all their leads.  If people ask why you aren ABC Company tell them you bought it.  No one’s gonna bat an eyelash.

Buy it and redirect to your main domain. My suggestion anyway is to do this once your competitor signed the contract and close the company.
