  • boss hesitant about giving me access to social media accounts. what should i do?

instead of simply giving me the credentials to the businesses social media accounts — specifically instagram and twitter — my boss is jumping through hoops to try to get me manage the account simply from the facebook page. while that could work for instagram it’s only if i’m set as an admin as well and i’m set as an editor. i explained and haven’t heard much back nor seen any changes.

i don’t want to push my boss about giving me access by just giving me the credentials, even if that means changing the password to something else just incase it’s the same for the personal accounts, but how else are they expecting me to do my job properly and efficiently? what should i do? help? please?

update: my boss and i were able to figure it out! there’s this feature on facebook called creator studio where you easily switch between facebook and instagram and their metrics. after dabbling around i’ve become obsessed! there are some downsides to it though such as not being able to interact with other pages that are not those who follow, like, comment, and dm.

Tell them you need access in order to do the job

Ask them to sign up for a third party password security system. I like using lastpass.

I use LastPass as well for password management. Facebook did recently update their page manager into Creator Studio. I had to google it to find tbh. But it’s a way to schedule Facebook posts, respond to comments on both platforms and see insights. However, I couldn’t figure out a way to schedule posts to IG from there (disclaimer, I only spent about 10 minutes trying).

So alternatively, I would just tell him you need the passwords to do your job properly and effectively

Import all Facebook properties into a business manager account. Have your boss invite you to the business manager as an employee and then set permissions accordingly. No need to log into the company FB account.

You would interact with the business using your personal FB profile, but with your work email tied to the business manager. This is really the right way to do it. No need to jump through hoops with password and logging in from different browsers or devices.

It seems like neither you or your boss know much about how FB works.

Your boss doesn’t need to give you his password.

You can post as the page in the editor role.

Now, I’m a professional, I work for several people whom I’ve never met in person, I have access to their billing system, social media, email, you name it. Are you coming off as trustworthy?

All suggestions are spot on, starting from lastpass to business accounts. Alternatively, you can flood him with requests – post this, reply this, retweet this. Ask for statistics, reports etc. it will work ?
