    Hi All!

I’m a small business owner and exploring my SEO options. Like many business owners I did my own website because budget was really the most important thing. I’ve used the same site host for ages but in my lurking on this forum it’s become clear I need to switch. My question is: what is the best host to move my website to before hiring an SEO expert/consultant?
If there is already a thread on this I’m so sorry but in searching I didn’t see anything.

Also as a follow up, I’d love to find out how I know I’m not getting taken and the person/firm we hire is trustworthy. I’m not so much worried about being able to recoup funds as we only do business on AMEX but some of the horror stories about rights to content, access etc are pretty scary.

You should probably post this in a web development subreddit. It doesn’t really have much to do with SEO and more to do with hosting.

I would hire someone first and see what they offer for hosting.

Hosting depends on a lot of things. Geography is important – you don’t want your site to be hosted far away from you. IE if you are located in North America you’ll want north american hosting. After that, server architecture is important. You want safe stable hosting that is not also hosted with thousands of other sites. So paying a little extra is worth it.

If you are thinking longer term, think about scaling your site. Will the hosting you are looking at support 100 concurrent visitors? How about 1,000? If not then look somewhere else.

You could also look at cloud based hosting – it’s a little more expensive but does a great job. I moved one of my sites to google cloud a little less than a year ago and it made a world of difference. My site is now on a self managed VPS so I have complete control over it. Best part is, when I needed more disk space, I just paused the machine, increased the space and restarted it.
