    Hey everyone
I’m new to digital marketing and currently a bit confused about where to start.

I’ve already gone through some free courses (like Google Garage), but they mostly felt like theory and MCQs without much practical value. Now I want to build real skills.

    👉 My main doubt:

Should I focus on Google Ads (PPC/SEM) first?

Or should I go for Social Media Marketing (organic + paid) first?

I’m interested in both, but not sure which one gives a better foundation for beginners and actual career opportunities.

Also, if you know any free or practice-based resources (other than Google Garage), please recommend.

Your submission looks to be asking for resources on getting started. If so, you are not the only one asking this question, try the search or the sidebar (lots of resources there).

You can have a good career in both. It should ultimately come down to where your interests lie and what your goals are. If your goal is simply to make as much money as possible, in my market, PPC marketers make far more money than social media marketers. But again, I would try to focus on your true interests rather than how you can make the most money. Chasing money in digital marketing tends to lead to burnout.

skip the theory rabbit hole, google garage is fine but won’t teach you how to actually get clicks or views. if you’re starting out, go with social media marketing first. it’s faster feedback, cheaper to test, and teaches you the fundamentals of attention (hooks, retention, copy). ppc is useful later, but it’s just numbers without creative instincts.

build a small page around a niche, post short-form, test hooks, captions, posting times. once you learn what holds ppl, then ads make sense. otherwise you’ll just pay to promote content no one watches.

another thing i’d suggest is running your reels/ads through video analysis tools (e.g. creafico, etc.) to get suggestions on what to improve in pacing/hooks—it’s like learning attention psychology in real time.

    Hope this helps !! 🙂

Go in parts within digital marketing, you have many branches to learn as you learn, you focus on a niche that you are good at.

Build an organic personal brand first bro, trust me i’v been a social media manager for 2years and that’s the most important thing! Dm if any other help needed 🙌 I’d like to share my experience with new people to SMM so they will not do the same mistakes as I done 🥲

I’d go to Udemy and take an overview course. Getting the big picture often helps clear up how things are related to each other, and what might fit better with your personality type rather than just your interest. 😊

Start with social media marketing (organic and paid) for easier learning and solid basics, then move to Google Ads. Check free practical courses like Facebook Blueprint, HubSpot Academy, and explore tools like Elaris (psychology-driven tool), which can help you reduce guesswork by pre-validating creatives and audience.

If you’re just starting out, I would advise starting with social media marketing as it’s a quicker way to obtain practical experience and develop a portfolio. You will acquire skills in content creation, engagement analysis, and audience behavior that will be useful even if you decide to go to Google Ads in the future. Moving into Google Ads or PPC will make much more sense after you’re at ease with both organic and paid social campaigns because you’ll already be familiar with the fundamentals of targeting, metrics, and conversion.
