Backlinks for free?

So I am kind of new to SEO, but I know backlinks are important. However, I can’t seem to find a way to acquire them for free. Is that even an option or do you always have to pay for it? -

If free means being creative, then do it! Otherwise, there is nada free luncha.

Yes, SEO need backlinks, but isn’t optimising for AI SEO better? The potential client already has the intent to buy. You just need to appear in the top 3 recommendations. For that, backlinks will not help you much.
PS: if you see that backlinks are free, it is most probably going to have a negative impact on your website.
