  • As a YouTuber, is it really that vital to have a Twitter account in 2021?

I run a variety gaming YouTube channel with over 2,000 subscribers, and over the years I’ve made accounts on various social media websites, more specifically Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram, to promote my content and share my interests with others. Twitter is easily the one I’ve used the most ever since 2014, and it’s turned from a place I’ve genuinely enjoyed to one that I can’t stand. It’s a toxic place filled with cancel culture, “woke” culture, spam, and some of the most aggressive people I’ve ever seen. It brings out the worst in everybody, myself included, and I recently purged all of my tweets in the hopes of getting a fresh start. But I’m starting to think that’s not enough. I mostly plan to use it for video updates from now on, but Twitter’s resources barely offer anything to help get your content out there, basically requiring you to know the right people to share your stuff. Even then, I believe nearly all of this could be accomplished on the YouTube community tab as well. There are two things I see creators do on Twitter to their benefit. They make connections with other creators so they can work together, and they can get in contact with YouTube about an issue if they’re loud enough since YouTube’s own help tools are bad enough as is. But are those things really worth it when your mental health is dwindling every day amongst all the toxicity that’s spewed out on the daily? Even PewDiePie, the biggest independent creator on YouTube, left Twitter due to all of this. So I ask, should I delete my Twitter account entirely for the sake of my mental state, or is there more potential there that I’m not realizing? If this is the wrong sub for this kind of discussion, please let me know.

For a gaming content creator, I don’t think so. I’d delete it if it’s not much use anymore.

For gamers, Twitch is a pretty big platform to use to meet others in the same niche like the gaming community !

I totally agree with you about Twitter becoming extremely toxic. Plus they cancel anyone they don’t agree with. So, I don’t see the point in keeping it unless you interact with other gamers on Twitter.

    Best of Luck! ??

I agree with you about Twitter. I deleted my account entirely a few weeks ago after realising that every time I went on it, I felt worse afterward. It’s just a hive of hatred and anger these days.

Twitter is the internet’s current “watercooler”, such is life when social media has been boiled down to a handful of websites where algorithms are gods. If spreading your video content across a more relevant platform is your aim, then why not use Tiktok? Looking at your post history, content like your “posting Bob to different music” isn’t too dissimilar from the type of gaming content that does well on there (short, funny, audience request friendly). I’m not going to say that Twitter is essential, you yourself said that you have multiple accounts across different platforms, but being somewhere where your target audience currently congregates sure is.

That said, you are ultimately in control of what you see on it even when you are just using social media to network. If the “woke”-ness and “cancel culture” of certain areas of Twitter is bothersome to you, then why not just stick to following official accounts like the official Nintendo account, or Twitter Gaming? You can farm interacts while avoiding the offending content.

(Although, lets be honest with ourselves for a second here; The anti-“woke”, anti-“cancel culture” side of the gaming sphere intentionally seeks out takes they disagree with in order to dunk on them while bemoaning the alleged decay of gaming (a multi***billion*** dollar industry) due to “going woke”, which is typically code for “I’m a boring hack who has to rely on outrage clicks because the AdSense/engagement is good and I’m scared of developing a real personality or skills”. Social media isn’t some woke hive, there’s just a surplus of outrage farmers with ulterior motives.)

If Twitter works for you then use it. Use the platforms you want and go from there. Don’t worry about number of follows etc as they will grow naturally.

If encounter any toxic users, block, report and move on.

My feeling is that you need to detach your personal feelings and continue using Twitter. It’s ultimately a promotional tool, and worth investing a certain amount of time and effort in. That might be a small amount, but it’s probably still worth some effort.

YouTube is my main channel, that’s where I want people to go. So Twitter and TikTok are promotional tools for getting people there. I don’t give two shits what people are saying on either platform, as long as they are getting the information I want them to get and converting that into views.

I barely open Twitter these days, maybe twice a week. It’s an awful place to be. I’d avoid if unless you genuinely feel that your channel benefits from it.

Be where your audience is. If they’re on Twitter, cross promote your content on Twitter.
