  • Alternative way to add social media links on a website? (Dont want AddThis as it takes over 400kb)

    Hey guys,

what is the best way to add social media profile links to my website (FB, Twitter, Linkedin) which is optimised for SEO? Not share buttons but like, follow etc.

I am currently using AddThis but this is affecting my PageSpeed score as the total load of this script is over 400kb (my whole website is around 1.1 mb now including this). So anyway to speed this up would be welcome

    Thank you!

Edit , forgot to clarify – this is for a HTML Site. Not using WordPress or any CMS

Find a lighter social sharing plugin. You have a lot of options. Some popular ones off the top of my head are Social Warfare and Sumo. Sumo is more like a full-fledged marketing platform so you might not use all of its features, but it does include social buttons.

Depends what platform you’re using as to what is easier for you. But you can go ahead and add some icons and links with some CSS. Probably take up about 0.5kb.

Use FontAwesome to tailor your own kit with only the social icons that you need.

is this for a WordPress site? where do you want to show the links? if you don’t feel comfortable with editing theme files, you can probably use a html widget to place in an acceptable spot.

Check if your theme supports this off the shelf. If not, try some plugin (I assume you use wordpress) that is not as resource expensive as AddThis.

    Image map.

A single image containing all social icons and their respective links.

I found social sharing buttons to be a waste. I had them on my site for two years and no one ever used them.

I have a static html website and use AddThis. If the speed was really affected then I would change it but I don’t think it’s too bad.

Just used regular links and use images as the anchor. Pretty simple.

I use AddThis, though I’m not a massive fan and would be open to alternatives. That said, are you loading the JS asynchronously at the end of your code? If so, it shouldn’t affect site speed.
