AI Max in a Search Campaign with 0 keywords (Plumber)

    According to Google:

Best practices for ads in AI Overviews

… Google requires AI-powered targeting solutions like broad match on Search or the keywordless targeting technology available through Performance Max, AI Max for Search Campaigns or Dynamic Search Ads, to match relevant ads …

So theoretically(or practically?)you can launch keywordless Search Campaign, turn on AI Max and rely on it's ability to use content of your landing pages and ads headlines/descriptions to present your ads to "right" people?

Yeah, that’s correct. Google’s AI Max for Search works similar to Dynamic Search Ads, it crawls your landing page and ad assets to match intent, even without keywords. It’s basically Google pushing advertisers toward broad match + automation. For local services like plumbers, it can work, but you’ll want a well-optimized landing page, clear service areas, and strong negative keywords. Otherwise, you risk wasted spend on irrelevant clicks.

AI Max is addition on the current campaigns, I don’t think you can start keywordless campaign, but maybe I’m wrong. We only applied AI MAX to currently running campaigns not created a new one just for AI MAX.

Yes, you can technically do it, but I’d be careful. AI Max might find you traffic, but it’s not always the right traffic. For plumbers, you probably want some level of keyword control – otherwise you risk paying for clicks from people looking for DIY tips instead of hiring a pro.
