    Hi Guys,

I’m a recent university graduate and been thrown in at the deep end at my new job. I’ve been tasked with creating the entire social media presence, processes and training of other staff members to use the Facebook account I’m setting up. I won’t lie to you, a lot of my knowledge is theoretical and I feel a little overwhelmed so I thought I’d turn to you guys. I don’t really have any specific questions but more asking for tips, tricks and any valuable knowledge that you could pass on to me.

Just for context, it’s a mid sized store turning over ~£1.2 million, just off a town high street, any more context needed and I’d be happy to explain

    Thanks

    A Severely Stressed Graduate

Just take it slowly, don’t rush into creating a social media presence without understanding what you or your company wants to get out of it.

When I had to create a whole new social media presence, I started by creating a brand guide, looking at other companies in similar fields as me to analyze what I liked and disliked about their social media pages. I established a specific tone that would be consistent in every post and created filter presets for my Instagram pages so the look of the grid would be consistent there as well. If you plan to make graphics, talk to your design department and see if you have branded fonts. If not, start playing around with font pairings. Two different fonts that work well together is best as it gives you some options to make different combinations. Anything more than that will just start to look disjointed.

Basically you want it all to work and flow together. Use a tone that can be easily replicated by your coworkers since you will be training them on how to use it. Set standards for your company so that when new brands emerge, they might look to what you’ve done as an example. Really take the time to analyze at least a handful of companies and actually write down your likes and dislikes about what they’re doing across the different platforms you plan to use and be sure to actually reference it when you start making posts. It’s more helpful than you might imagine when having to start out from scratch.

It will be overwhelming until it gets up and running, then it will be smooth sailing from there. Best of luck to you!
