Do you ever feel like you’re not good enough in your job? That you’re too old, or maybe too niche? Or that you’re somehow less “qualified” to run professional social media accounts because your own personal pages have very few followers, so how can you actually know what people want to interact with?

I don’t know, I just feel like because I’m not an influencer I don’t belong in the field of digital marketing and social media because I lack experience. Especially when Gen-Z is reaching the career age and have all grown up with social media. Does anyone else feel like this? Or is it just my imposter syndrome acting out again?

If you’re good at your job and you’re willing to keep learning and growing as a professional, it doesn’t matter how old you are, how many followers you have or what your niche is. Just like any other marketing/communications/advertising job, you don’t have to be your target audience to know the best ways to engage with or appeal to them.

There are still plenty of clients that are older that are fairly new to all this, too. And older people using social media or learning to that didn’t grow up on it. Those people will likely more relate to you and you to them than someone from Gen-Z that grew up with it.

Those people can become your niche. But even if you’re just doing the exact same job as all the Gen-Zers, etc. then you’re likely going to see things from a different perspective and create something that stands out a bit more.

Your age and followers don’t matter. Increase the ability to learn and explore more. Your intentions should be good and thought should be very clear about what and why you are doing. You will get success sooner or later.

By thinking this way, you will be mentally depressed and unable to work properly.

Your personal page should have little/nothing to do with you skills/career as a digital marketeer.

My personal music/fan page has 20k+ followers, I haven’t posted in years ’cause I gave up on having socials in my personal life, now I just market/sell something where the customer never needs to know *me,* and life is great

Never too old if you’re excited and willing to learn about new tools/technologies. Also remember there’s plenty of others feeling just like you. Keep at it.

I think everyone goes through this in the beginning, but over time I think your successes make you feel more comfortable.

Not saying this is the case for yourself, but a lot of people are now simply coming into this business because they see it as easy money. Ready, Fire, Aim, style people, or as my buddies and I like to call it “the wolves have come to eat”. Meaning the people who were ripping people off in another business 5 years ago in marketing until their clients realize none of it is working are now trying to preach that posting canva images is somehow going to reflect on your bottom line.

At the end of the day, this market is being saturated, but if you show your clients success you will continue to do well. If someone were to attempt to probe me in any form, I can easily show them $50,000,0000+ increase testimonials from clients in total.

I was pretty much told this in an interview recently. They found my personal account and questioned why I didn’t have enough engagement… I didn’t ask YOU to look at this???

But I really don’t think this is the norm. I think I just had a really shitty interview with a crap company and that’s why their job listing is still up.

I used to work in television and the last thing I wanted to do when I got home was… watch television. I’ve abandoned my social accounts years ago, because I’ve come to my own conclusions. However we do marketing every day through all channels and I have to oversee it. I do have a few go-getter gen-z types that live and breathe digital. But they are young and although they are savvy they are naive. They need people like us that have the decades of wisdom to help guide them. I was one of them once and more than likely they will become me at some point. That’s how it works.

I will say that if marketing has lost its appeal to you, start to look elsewhere as being stuck in an industry you don’t resonate with that is predicated on “creativity” will suck your soul out of your butthole. And once that happens you’re no use to anyone, especially yourself.

I feel this way constantly. I have a client with a HUGE following and I often feel bad because I know that they could hire someone else who could do a much better job – I am still learning a lot and I try my best, but I know I could be doing more. I try to not let it get me down because they are happy and have never complained. The following keeps growing and things are going well and I keep learning, but I definitely understand the feeling you’re having.

I feel you. I worked for several years in a very niche industry (and succeeded) and recently was hired, thanks to someone at the company that knew me, into a tech/e-commerce company. Unfortunately, it didn’t work out. I worked my ass off day and night, but I didn’t pick up what the owner wanted quick enough. I learned a shit ton, so at least I got that.

Just had an existential crisis about this last week ? But the fact is that running a social media account is a full time job, and my personal account is somewhere for me to post the content I like, without stressing too much about the numbers game.

If you are worried about staying competitive in your career, maybe you can focus on cultivating other soft skills that would make you more marketable? Plus don’t underestimate the value of life experience.

Keep in mind that “feeling” social media is not everything. The most important thing is to know the business impact! And this requries business experience.
