Shopify / Google Paid Search showing as Organic Traffic?

Posted by seohelper on July 3, 2020 at 8:43 pm

    Hi guys,

So I have been running Paid Google Search campaigns for my Shopify store, however the vast majority of the time when I get a sale (conversion) it is showing as “Visited your store from an organic search result on Google” in the conversion/session details.

I am very sure this is false. I only recieve conversions on this product when I do paid search campaigns with google. I don’t get any conversions when I don’t advertise. I checked the timestamps, I recieved 5 visitors in the hour that conversion was made and 5 clicks were registered on my Search campaign.

How on earth can this be organic and not paid? The only reason I care is its affecting my ability to scale and see what keyword the sale came from. This is happening for quite a few of my sales, hence a lot of them are going without showing as a conversion in google ads.

Any help really appreciated as I can’t scale when I don’t know where its coming from!

    Thanks.

Shopify is not an analytics platform and a brand should never look inside the platform for results. Setup a goal in Google Analytics, turn on enhanced ecommerce and import that into Google Ads. Then look in Google Analytics for your results.

I would make sure auto-tagging is enabled in the Google Ads account. This is an account setting. I would also assure that your Google Ads and Google Analytics accounts are linked with reporting enabled through both platforms to each other. You should also assure that there is no use of custom parameters with the landing page URLs. I would suggest looking at the product pages used in the feed of their Google Merchant Center account. The product page URLs in the feed should match the URLs you would find as an organic User shopping the site. The last one is unlikely, but a good option to explore. I think enabling autotagging should correct it.

I’ve had a similar issue, where the shopify checkout page had it’s own GA pixel, which interfered with the the user’s session and all conversions then came through as Organic. Might be worth a look, if you’re seeing initial traffic come in correctly.
