    Outbrain Traffic Discrepancy

Posted by seohelper on April 8, 2021 at 10:19 pm

    Hi,
We are seeing something weird in traffic that we buy from outbrain, first I thought it was a tracking issue but after trying everything we are sure it is not that.
We have been buying traffic from Taboola to our content pages for 2 years and we always had a bounce rate of around 30% and a pageviews per session of 6-10. From the 100 clicks we buy on Taboola we get 100 sessions in Google Analytics and in Cloudflare.

We thought that Outbrain should have almost the same kind of traffic, but here we have a bounce rate of 96% and PPS of 1.2. Also we see that there is a big discrepancy of the clicks we buy and the sessions we get, 100 clicks vs 60 sessions.

We’ve implemented Hotjar on our page and the sessions we do get do look like bot traffic, but for us it is hard to imagine that all traffic that we buy from Outbrain are bots.

The strange thing is that a year ago we already tried Outbrain on a small scale, but the data shows that back then we did not had this issue, while all our campaign settings are the same as back then.

We are sure that is not something in our tracking or site implementation.

Does someone know what to do or what might help?

A large portion may end up being post view instead of post click. Check to see how many display placements you’re getting. Not all native inventory is the same.

Neither GA nor Hotjar will properly attribute that traffic as they can only see click based users and a large portion of display or lower viewability native will be accidential clicks.
