  • new social media websites?

Do you think there will be new platforms in this space or is it over already? I am talking about niche platforms that start as a website, not iOS/Android-only.

For example the last I can think of is giphy, launched in 2013, acquired by facebook in 2020.

I might be a bit biased, but I really like the concept of the social media site I’m currently working on called SpaceHey. It aims to be a safe & friendly space on the web, while rebooting the design of MySpace. I launched it in November and there are already > 100 000 users there! 🙂

There will always be something new. I’m sure in 5 years or so tiktok won’t be as popular and something else will. But I’m not sure what kind of concept could beat tiktok – the reason it’s so popular is because no one has an attention span and the videos are so short and never ending

Social media is saturated, no point starting a web one what could they possibly do to be different. It’s also a huge cost to acquire users nowadays, I heard TikTok spends 30$ not sure if it’s true.

As of February 2021, 55.56 percent of all web traffic comes through mobile phones. That number is going to keep rising so I don’t know about website only platforms but there will always be something new on the horizon. Today, it’s Clubhouse. Who knows what it will be tomorrow.

The future is protocols, not platforms.

There’s an interoperable protocol now in use by a quickly growing ecosystem (counting by the number of software projects that implement the specification). There are no gatekeepers, the system look and works like Email. Look at the work being done out of the W3C, or check my reddit profile for a multireddit explaining this concept.
