  • Need to practice SEO: Do I exploit what I already have or find another niche?

Hi! I studied Marketing in university, but given the fact that my thesis got paused due to the pandemic, I started to learn a few skills including SEO, content writing and copywriting (I write about the entertainment industry for a few websites, and I thought that this was a good way to connect my career with my side hustle).

Anyways, I need to practice SEO and a constant recommendation is to create a personal blog and try to implement SEO to it. The thing is that I have a personal blog where I write about books, movies and TV shows just for fun (and as a part of my portfolio for my writing gigs). I created this blog in 2014, but in my Country (Guatemala) is a super SMALL niche: not much people watch independent cinema and much less people read. So when I search for keywords in my country, they’re very far from what my blog is about. Most people search for academic books.

What would you recommend it that case? Create a new blog with relevant topics for my area? Or do you have tips to exploit what I already have?

My thought would be to do what will be relevant for your target career. If you plan on taking work in Guatemala, then it will help to gain experience in getting traffic from Guatemala, which might mean changing your niche. If you plan on doing online or freelance work that comes from anywhere in the world, then the experience of developing a global audience will be handy.

Just my idea. I’m sure others will have more.

Does your keywords have search volume in other languages? If so, you could translate the content and implemented hreflang on a subdomain.

    Crush your niche.
Besides ranking for keywords, become THE authority.

Especially if demand is not high and there is low compétition, you will figure out how to become the ultimate authority.

You will learn on other levels than basic popularity (Backlinks=>pagerank=>ranking), including authority and notoriety.

After you dominate your niche, you can move on to bigger challenges.
