Posted by seohelper on March 4, 2021 at 7:25 pm

Hi everyone, I’m an artist that is trying to build a strong committed fanbase for my music and Instagram, that I can really engage with. How do I go about doing this? I’m not looking for bots or f4f. I use hashtags but they aren’t bringing me exposure. My Instagram is “@actorindisguise7. Feel free to give me feedback or real help. Thank you!

Million pound question, but ultimately focus on your craft primarily, and slowly funnel people in as you post content, do a guest article for a blog, have your work featured elsewhere, word of mouth, forums/youtube etc

Start small, make it your goal to reach 10 followers who are actively listening to your art, then 20, etc..
The speed doesn’t matter, but once you have a bit of a hive, you’ll start to scale it up and unlock bigger opportunities

If you’re blessed with a talent/craft, focus on your content, as thats the thing that’ll eventually catapult the whole operation

What are you offering your audience that would entice them to follow, besides music? Is it interesting content, beautiful photos, behind the scenes looks, cool outfits, inspiration or real struggles, etc. Do you follow other artists that have engaging content? Are there any artists you follow that have terrible content? Do the same exercise in other industries? And at the end of the day, be you. Don’t create a brand around someone you’re not, it won’t last.

Hey there – do you do TikTok? I’ve recently had some luck in migrating some (not a ton, but a couple hundred) over to my insta and Twitch from Tiktok

Just checked out your account. Here are some things I would recommend you change straight away that would increase your reach:

    1) Your bio is searchable on Instagram so you want it to be filled with key words so that if someone types in for example “rapper” your account might come up in the suggested. A good example of bios you might want to take inspo from are @ chloeleighmusic I would also consider putting musician in your name which is currently just “kerry”. This would help people discover your account and help Instagram categorise you and know who better to show your content to.

    2) Focus on adding more content, the follower to profile click ratio is always lower for people with less than 15 posts and its because at a glance when people look at your profile it isn’t well established it doesn’t give people the sense of security they want when considering following

    3) I would get a website or use something like a linktree or allmylinks to have as the link in your bio. Right now if I followed you on Instagram it would be impossible for me to go follow you anywhere else but Youtube. Ideally you want to give people options and reassure them that you have an internet presence in other places.

    4) Add story highlights to your page. One should definitely be a bit about you and what you are doing and your backstory and another should be a sample of your music, the rest of the highlight categories are up to you but if possible try and get 5 at least as that empty space adds to the feeling of your account not being well established.

I think you would instantly see better results from doing everything above but I also want to give you some strategy advice as well so here is what I would recommend ensuring the long term growth of your social media presence:

    1) Use all of Instagrams features, make reels and IGTV’s especially since those would be a great way to showcase your music but try and basically use as many of the features of Instagram as you can. It’s good for your algorithm and it helps you reach different audiences and it makes your account look more active and gives you more versatile content.

    2) On your static posts you can use 30 hashtags, if you are looking to grow the account then try to use all 30. You should have hashtags that are relevant to your niche and vary in traffic that way you are casting your net to the biggest audience. If you are scared of looking desperate (which I don’t think you should be but for some reason lots of people are) then comment an emoji under your post and reply to that emoji with your hashtags. Try to change the hashtags often.

    3) Establish some kind of schedule. It will make your life easier and it will hold you accountable to upload regularly and consistently which is good for growth you could use any of the ideas below :

Once a week you share an artist you love that week

Every Saturday you share a sample of your music #samplesaturday

Once a month you share a lesson you learned related to the music industry

    Selfie/outfit/art pic once a week

Also approach small artist repost accounts and see if they would feature you. Tag locations that your target audience are likely to be scrolling through and try to interact with your audience as much as possible. Look into the $1.80 method by Gary Vee to see how to do that efficiently.

    4) Try and use as many platforms as you can. Tiktok, Reddit, Facebook, Twitter, Spotify, Youtube, Linkedin having a small presence on every platform means that you can repurpose content across them and also means that you won’t miss out on a potential follower just because you aren’t on their primary platform. I think Tik Tok is where you could benefit from focusing a lot of your time and energy because it’s great for artists without an established following and the algorithm likes people who have original sounds which you would have. However, I would recommend that to grow on TikTok you would want to be posting almost daily and you would likely need to spend a lot of time on the platform to know what content to post, ideally you want to grab on to trends.

I think your account has real potential and I am sure you are going to see results if you put the time in. Hope that helps, feel free to ask anything else specific

Perhaps, you can focus on connecting your own brand of music to the interests of your audience. You can begin with maybe, asking them to request songs that you can cover, and in doing so, you can introduce your own music. They might be surprised that you actually produce your own music, and it can already establish some interest in them, and therefore anticipate it. Giving them some previews about your upcoming music establishes it even more, and you can do it through releasing snippet contents on your IG page. Also, appreciate those fans who always keep on engaging with you through shout-outs, or giveaways. Let your talent and music inclination drive in some fans, and that will turn into a huge fanbase soon.

Start with small. You can tag people with profiles related to you. Following some profiles will result in increasing followers. As they follow back. Use your niche-related hashtags. You can also use trending hash tags if you can generate for followers of those hash tags. These tips will increase your followers.
