    Hello all,

I am currently an intern at a nonprofit, specifically a [Digital] Marketing Intern, but I have self-appointed the title to myself as Social Media Manager Intern, as I essentially run the social media – curating content/posts, creating graphics, scheduling posts, sourcing relevant outside articles/info, created social media strategy, social media audit, create social media campaigns, etc.

It is all fairly simple, but I’ve really had to create this position myself and do all this myself from what I’ve learned online (my background isn’t in marketing and this is my first position in digital marketing). Coming into this job, I noticed fairly quickly that they didn’t really have anything specific for me, so they essentially said “Okay, what do you want to do?” and that when I thought of the SMM.

Anyway, my position is coming to an end Oct. 30th, as this was only a temp. 3-month internship. I know 3 months isn’t long but I have no other choice.

It seems like from here, I good logical choice would be to start learning SEO and get an entry level position in that concentration.

I’ve begun to teach myself some SEO to see how I like it, and I believe it is something I want to focus on has I begin my career in digital marketing. It also seems like the most logical step from where I’m at and a good skill to pick up within digital marketing, regardless.

Any advice/recommendations for learning? Best sources? Things one should know when just starting out learning SEO and getting an entry level position in it? I figured, once this position ends, if I can put my head down and focus/study SEO for the next couple months, I’d be ready for an entry level position. I hope my assumption isn’t off.

Anyway, any help/advice/words of wisdom are appreciated.

The best way to learn SEO is hands-on experience.

I threw myself in the deep end by building a website, taking the best and most common practices of SEO and refining my strategy through trial and error.

Be prepared to make a LOT of mistakes and try not to get disheartened by the lack of results, because almost every niche these days is competitive and you will definitely struggle initially.

Most importantly, I’d advise against doing an unpaid SEO internship (keyword, unpaid). I have no idea if you were an unpaid intern in your current position, but doing an unpaid internship for SEO is absolutely the last thing you want in terms of experience and return on your time and effort.

The only reason you should ever consider it is if you get tangible, academic/educational benefits from it that could benefit your long-term future – anything else is literally a waste of your time but great for the agency.

SEO is a fucking nightmare sometimes. You have industry “experts” that tell you one thing, snake oil salesmen who tell you another and for beginners, it’s extremely hard to weed out disinformation from good practices.

Absolute beginner resources would be checking out Ahrefs blog, SEMRush blog, [learningseo.io](https://learningseo.io) as a starting point, since they’ll cover 99% of the real basics.

Whilst their advice isn’t always terrible, they have an alternative agenda so try to avoid Brian Dean, Neil Patel, Chase Reiner but you might personally find some value from their content.

If you want to get more advanced, the best resources are Bill Slawski, Aleyda Solis, Glenn Gabe and SERoundTable (to constantly be in the know of what’s going on). I’m sure I missed a ton though.

If you are serious about wanting to get into SEO – you have to be passionate. You’re basically working for a boss who ignores you, isn’t transparent, doesn’t care about your best interests and every 6 months will throw a spanner in the works that either ruins your life temporarily or brings you great joy.

    Hope I helped.
