How come platforms’ notification counters max out at lower numbers than before?
For example, Twitter’s legacy website’s notification counter went to 99 (over 100: “99+”) before the new July 2019 version that was enforced in June 2020. But the new progressive web app version (originally “Twitter Lite” for mobile) maxes out at 20. At 21 notifications and above, it reads “20+”.
YouTube did once show “99+”, but now only “9+”. However, unlike Twitter, the page title (visible on window title and tab) on YouTube indicates the full number in parenthesis. Twitter only indicates “(20)”. Not even “(20+)”.
What are the economical and/or psychological reason for this lowering?
