Google Ads: Is there any way to get smart shopping campaigns to place nice with standard Campaigns?

Posted by seohelper on May 14, 2020 at 9:58 pm

Smart Shopping campaigns bring me a great ROAS on a small budget, but it sucks the life out of my Standard Shopping campaigns.

I would switch everything over to Smart Shopping, but the risk is too high because:

    1. Smart Shopping doesn’t give me any insights as to what’s going on.
    2. Although it does well generally, there are times when performance will dip for no reason.
    3. Small budget changes create big swings in performance (risky to scale).
    4. I don’t want to put all of my eggs in to one (Google) basket.
    5. The data!!

It would be great if I could have my cake and eat it, too 🙂 That is, run Smart Shopping alongside Standard Shopping and Showcase so I can get the great return from Smart as well as all the insights from Standard.

Are any of you running Smart Shopping alongside Standard Shopping campaigns? How are you making it work? How are you segmenting your products between Smart and Standard?

I’d love to hear your thoughts! Thanks in advance!

Hello, I took over an account with all products in smart shopping campaigns. However, like you said I came across the problem of scaling, data, and learning period. Because of this I planned to move some of my products into standard shopping.

My smart shopping campaigns are focused on my top sellers – items that have been consistently doing well regardless of swings. Another smart shopping campaign contains my low margin ones set to a high tROAS and a lower budget. This way, I’m kinda letting these products cruise control bc it’s not the top 20% of the revenue.

The products I have for standard shopping are seasonal items and products that we really want to push but they haven’t been successful on smart shopping. In this way, I could control my bids and scale them. Hope this helps.
