I run a page with around 40k followers. Over the past month or so I’ve noticed our net followers decreasing by about 15 per day (we will get 10-20 follow us but 30-40 unfollow us). Our content has stayed consistent. No major changes. We post about 5x per week and always have. Engagement is at roughly 1-1.5% which is lower than I would like but doesn’t seem to be a big enough dip to explain the loss of followers. Any ideas on where I should be looking? Is there some metric I’m missing? Any help would be appreciated.

I assume this is for Instagram? Probably them deleting bot accounts TBH. It’s not that you’re getting “unfollowed” as much as your followers are getting deleted. (Or that’s my guess. Hard to say with only the details you provided).

Is it on Facebook? And what age is your Target Group? Could it be, that they’re moving on to another platform?

This would be a result of Instagram deactivating bot and fake accounts. Which means there’s a good chance your new followers are “real” people which should give you a boost in engagement numbers.

IG auto removes bots and fake accounts.

Check your analytics. Is your likes roughly +/- 10% of your views?

Are you auto-posting or manual posting? Check your content and the engagement per post.

Switch up tactics. This happens in cycles, so find out what’s best for you. Can’t do the same thing and expect the same results when Instagram evolves and changes their algorithm constantly.

Maybe your hashtags are getting stale (consistently used in the posts), or bots/users are pumping content using the same tags.

I am a community experience representative and my job is to retain the number of our followers. It’s hard to keep the numbers without doing engagement on a daily basis. So maybe increase the engagement by visiting accounts that follow the hashtags you use, leaving comments on their posts, like, etc
