Do subdomains affect root domains?
Say a subdomain sub.example.com has a load of bad signals (bad links, 404s, poor content, etc.) would it affect the SEO of the root domain example.com?

It’s not supposed to. Subs area consisted their own sites

No. But it can work the other way around (root affects sub). Especially if the subdomain is very similar to the root domain.
