I’m a musician. I want to connect with other musicians. I’m not at a point where “limitless organic growth” is feasible or appropriate, and that’s not what I’m on socials to do (yet).

There’s no such thing as LinkedIn for musicians (or if there is, I haven’t heard of it), so I’m stuck using platforms like instagram, soundcloud, etc that seem to be less about building a network and making authentic connections and more about just “posting.”

Are there software tools or strategies I could use to do this more effectively? I don’t care about “content”, I care about the people I follow. Just using Instagram as a billboard for my music seems like a wasted opportunity.

A challenge I run into is following a bunch of other bands, not having them show up on my Instagram feed, and forgetting that I even made the connection. If I could build my own feed for “stuff people you recently followed posted” that would really help me stay engaged with what these new connections are doing.

I don’t think there are any tools for that. But I think Instagram is a good platform to connect with other people. The thing is, you have to engage in conversation.

So what you have to do is identify potential accounts akin to your music. Note the names on an excel file and remember to interact with them, i.e. go manually to their profiles and check if they have something new, perhaps even send them a private message.

By doing this, you will make the algorithm favor them.

I’m a photographer and I’ve made quite a bit of connections this way with other photographers around my city and internationally. You just have to dedicate some time to it.
