I am the Marketing Manager for a non-profit and while I love my job and all that it entails I genuinely HATE what Facebook has become. I liked the old Facebook Biz Manager but now removing notifications is so much more tedious. Facebook (and now IG) as a whole just seems like there is so much noise going on and almost TOO many options for ways to share content. I wish IG at least was left alone, with the timeline being chronological and strictly centered around sharing visual content. The addition of stories to ALL platforms (even Twitter and LinkedIn now) just seems like overkill… Not to mention TikTok has invaded all platforms. I know video content has always performed better on most platforms but the way IG hosts video and kicks you from page to page is really annoying, and that’s just talking about using it for personal reasons.

With the pandemic, I found it hard to set social goals for my org due to the uncertainties of this year. Will more people be online equaling more engagement? Or will more voices and companies utilizing online platforms more lead to an overwhelming amount of content and subsequently leading my org’s content to be lost in the sea, so to speak? Or will people be burnt out now more than ever with “virtual fatigue” after a year of doing everything online and try to distance themselves from it all together? Now I’m just ranting but it will be interesting to see how our performance goes. Prior years we had a steady increase in fans/followers across all platforms but around June we lost a lot of followers (I read research saying social engagement was at an all time low for 2020 around June). Anyone else sharing these thoughts?

Oh, you’re not alone. it’s horrendous. It’s full of bugs. It’s bloated with legacy features that aren’t useful. It’s so inconsistent between desktop and mobile. Notifications rarely notify of anything important. It’s a mess.

Have you tried planoly? I spend Sunday making instagram posts for the week then schedule one for each morning. Takes a lot of stress out plus you can go back and edit to make sure your text is on point.

Not sure if totally relevant but wanted to mention

Yeah, Facebook has only gotten worse this year by an order of magnitude. Whole system is dogshit.

This is the complaint we see often from those that don’t like change. There’s an unreal idea that everything will stay the same and nothing will change with time.

You can either spend your time crying about change or you can jump right into it and make the most of it while those crying are still wasting their time. No amount of complaining is going to change it.

And yes, we have seen an increase in social media usage from users and increased number of posts from brands in the past year (but that’s true every year).

As always, you have to make something special to really stand out. I know you think what you make is special but let’s be honest with ourselves, would you REALLY stop and engage with it and share it with others if you didn’t work for your company? The truth is most content isn’t very good and it’s completely bias on our part to believe that while 99.9% of the content out there is boring, ours isn’t. It’s exactly how every parent thinks their above average or how more than 90% of drivers believe they’re an above-average driver. We can’t see the truth from where we stand.

Social media is no different than any other form of marketing or any business for that matter. With increase in popularity and money to be made, competition will increase every year. Be ready to live with that and find ways to better your competition or retire now and get a job where you don’t have to worry about such.

My page is HUGe but I hardly ever bother with it these days. I just focus on building my website audience. I generally just avoid wasting my time with FB and IG.

Notifications are all filled with unimportant stuff. I wish you could filter notifications by type like you can on Tiktok.

Fellow nonprofit marketer here. I’m frustrated, too. The glitches are a huge pain and just this week Facebook removed the Donate button from all of my scheduled video posts when they published. That was not a fun surprise.

I was concerned about goal setting, too. I had set some really aggressive goals for 2020, and we surpassed nearly all of them, due in part to our covid response. I took a look at our historical data and set 2021 goals that I believe are realistic. Our content is good and engaging and that’s not going to change. Having said that, I’m giving myself grace to make adjustments as the year goes on. As long as I can back it up with good data, our board will support those adjustments.

YES! Every time I go to manage a page on FB I feel like I went back in time 10-15 years as far as UI and UX go. Horribly organized all around. Sucks everyone won’t mass migrate to another platform.

Agree with this… and organic reach is almost impossible on Facebook. I hope IG doesn’t go down with it

Ive been in different aspects of marketing for 20+ years. I’ve been staying away from Facebook and Instagram since 2019, and have been encouraging my clients not to spend money or much effort on Facebook.

All the users (potential customers/clients) have a Facebook account, login to Facebook on occasion, but they don’t want to see much of what we’re posting. Several billion people that don’t give a shit is not as beneficial as several million that could potentially give a shit. So, yeah, I skip Facebook and Instagram, WhatsApp too even.

I’d like to find out whether anyone wondered how in 2120 people may evaluate today’s social media scene? What will they say?
