Kudos to Apple/Tim Cook for providing some privacy features in their new OS against the relentless data harvesting by Facebook and others. It has gotten out of control. I personally advocate “editing” select profile info on these apps so that data harvested is of “limited use”. Someday, hopefully this pervasive, invasive and really objectionable practice can be brought under control.

You must not be in the business of advertising because these restrictions have hurt ads across the board. These changes could have been done in a better way while still giving the much needed data needed for successful ads. Also, I don’t think this post will age well. There has been quite a bit of speculation that Apple will come out with their own ad network. Make no mistake – Apple still has access to all this data and are invading people’s privacy on a much larger scale. The only thing they did was limit the access to that data to others.

Lol people get salty about data collection from a free service they opt in to. No one is forcing you to use Facebook, put it on your phone or share data with them.

This isn’t a privacy measure. It’s an anti competitive measure.

Facebook doesn’t have less user data now, apple broke attribution on being able to connect ad spend to ad revenue.

Facebook still has the vast vast majorty of data on you it always has, you give it to them.

Thx for all the responses. Just a couple of thoughts.

    1. I am not on Facebook because (IMHO) it is a dishonest organization that has facilitated genocide, subversion and in general the distribution of disinformation, idiocy and blatant lies.
    2. Advertising that is intrusive, idiotic, uninformative and generally tries to dupe people into buying worthless junk is wrong. Advertising today makes Don Draper and his crew look like saints.
    3. Privacy is crucial in the digital word. Collecting massive data files on individuals can only lead to its inevitable misuse and abuse.
    4. Facebook and their derivatives pander to the weak minded who are unable to critically evaluate objective information and form an rational opinion. Information on these people is then sold to advertisers who further exploit their vulnerabilities. Very sad situation.
